Herkimer Date Line William S. Fay 91 of the Galinsky Apartments, Herkimer passed away Monday August 6, 2012. Bill was born August 5, 1921 in Ilion the son of the late H. Stewart and Ellen (Foothorape) Fay, and was a graduate of the Ilion High School and later in life took courses in golf course equipment maintainance. Bill served his country serving in the US Navy during WW2. Bill’s first marriage was to the mother of his children Jean Carroll, he later married Dorothy Southard who predeceased him. Bill was employed with Special Metals in Herkimer for many years as a Metallurgic Technician and after retiring worked with golf courses doing golf cart maintenance. Bill was a member of St Augustine’s Church in Ilion, the Ilion Vol. Fire Dept. a former member to the Ilion Fireman’s Band, The Beavers, was active with Veterans Clubs in the area, a Preservationist; collecting stamps as well as local history memorabilia. Bill also played with several local bands as a drummer, he was also a former boy scout. Bill is survived by a daughter and son in law Leslie and Roy Dillon of Columbus, OH, a brother Robert H. Fay of Milford, NH, a sister and brother in law Dorothy and William Slocum of Ilion, his grandchildren Andrew Riedel, Alison Cherry, Amanda, Doug, and John Fay, great grandchildren Matther, Bode, Sam and Emily, also several nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his son Douglas Fay. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service to be held on Friday August 10, 2012 at 1:00 pm at the St Augustine’s Church, Second Street Ilion with Rev. John Bassett officiating. In keeping with Bill’s wishes there is no calling hours. Bill had many friends in the valley since he returned from South Carolina. A special thanks to Oneita and her family and Pat and Kathleen, for their friendship and kindness. Friends are asked to consider memorials to St. Augustine’s Church in Bill’s memory.
