Mohawk Raymond Gordon Garlock, 97, of Mohawk, departed this life on March 1, 2015 and will be dearly missed by all his loving family and friends. Raymond was born in Ilion, on December 16, 1917; he was the son of the late Raymond A. Garlock and Meta V. (Mather) Garlock. Ray attended Ilion High School and enjoyed many sports mainly track and gymnastic and graduated in 1936 receiving a High School Diploma. In 1942 Raymond married Mildred Ann Whitcomb in Methodist Church Little Falls N.Y. They attended Paines Hollow Methodist Church. Raymond worked in Remington Rand and Univac in Ilion and Utica as a Process Engineer Foreman from 1936 to 1974 when he retired. He had also bought a small dairy farm in Paines Hollow with his wife Mildred and three children. Then on November 16, 1975 was married to Beverly Jane Shepard [Cole]. Raymond joined the United States Army 10th Mountain Infantry Division 87th Company I Ski Troop and was a World War II Vet. He entered the service on May 21, 1942. Served in the European and Pacific theaters of operation; at the Aleutian Islands, North Apennines and Po Valley, Italy with the headquarters, 10th Mountain Infantry Division and the 87th Mountain Infantry Division, Company I. Ray earned the Specialist Infantry Badge and was awarded the Purple Heart, Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and lapel button issued. He was honorably discharged on September 29, 1945 in Fort Dix, NJ with rank of Technical Sergeant. Ray was a devoted husband and father and friend to all and known as a very honest and caring man. He converted the farm to raising White-Faced Polled Hereford beef cows. Ray over his lifetime enjoyed working on the farm growing crops and in the garden growing vegetables; working in the woods logging, cutting fire wood, hunting, and was an excellent skier. He worked 35 plus years in the antique business and named his business Log Cabin Antiques. Ray built a log cabin in 1974 outside of Mohawk NY where he lived. Ray is preceded in death by his two brothers Richard Garlock, Paul Garlock and his grand-daughter Davina Sue (McKenney) Stapleton. Raymond is remembered by his wife Beverly and his children: Sandra Jean (Garlock) McKenney and husband David of Sherburne NY; Gordon Kip Garlock and wife Patricia (Tripple) of Mohawk NY; Ellen Diane (Garlock) Goff and husband Gene of Vermontville NY; step-daughter Arlene B.(Cole) Miller and husband Greg of West Windfield; also 7 grandchildren; Cheryl McKenney, Jean McKenney, and Myra Beth (McKenney) Scott and husband Jay of Sherburne; Chad David Garlock of Little Falls NY; Sara (Goff) Glaneuski and husband Jason of Brockton, Mass.; Marla (Goff) Wolter and Husband Tim of Slingerland NY ; Bruce Goff and wife Maria of Little Rock, Arkansas; Ray's brother Donald Garlock of Florida and sister Barbara [Garlock] Pelton and husband Stewart of Florida; brother in law Tom Shephard and wife Anne of South Carolina; and 10 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. He is also remembered by many relatives including many nieces, nephews, great nieces, nephews, also by two special little girls Delaney and Paisley and his many friends. Raymond also was a member of Masonic Lodge in Ilion from 1941 to present also a member of American Legion of Mohawk NY and Town of German Flatts Councilman from 1960-1984. Funeral services for Ray will be held on Saturday May 30, 2015 at noon at the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home Inc. 100 Otsego St. in Ilion, Pastor Brian Engel will officiate. Interment will follow in the St. Johnsville Cemetery with military honors. Friends may call on Saturday from 10am until the time of the funeral. The Mohawk American will conduct ritual services on Saturday at 11 am at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers contributions to Cancer Research and Spinal Cord Research may be made.
