Ilion Albert Joseph Helmer Jr., (Al), "Butch," 76 of Ilion passed away on Monday August 24, 2015 at Little Falls Hospital. Al was born on August 22, 1939 in Herkimer, he was the son of the late Albert J. and Catherine Mary (Seaver) Helmer. He attended Ilion Schools with the class of 1957 and was employed at HCCC until his retirement in 2000. On October 12, 1968 Albert married the former Betty Doremus at the People's Undenominational Church in Cedarville. Al was a member of the Ilion Presbyterian church where he served as Deacon for 10 years, Herkimer German Maennerchor, a former member of Ilion Moose Lodge 1010, he was also an avid bowler. Al is survived by his wife Betty; two sons, Alec and his wife Jennifer, and Albert "Joe" and his wife Julie, both of Ilion; two daughters Alicia and her husband Kevin Townsend of Brewerton, NY and Ann and her husband Richard Farmer of Cornelius, NC; three brothers Robert and his wife Carol of Winterhaven FL, Richard of Cohoes, NY and David and his wife Heike of Berkley CA; three sisters Mary Bongiorno of Frankfort, Doreen Helmer of Herkimer and Joellen Schafer of Ilion; ten grandchildren Timothy Helmer-Hall, Jillian and Paige Farmer, Joey and Samantha Helmer, Matt and Morgan Townsend, Lucas Mickle Alyssa and Corinne Baerman; one great grandchild Aiden Townsend; a godchild Carissa Johnson; in laws Arthur Doremus and Tom Martin, Ruth Hanrahan, Marjorie Creaser, Jane Rood, Fred and Judy Doremus, Roy and Cheryl Doremus, Gene and Mary Doremus, John and Sherry Bouck, Keith and Pat Doremus, Karen and Jack Allen, Carl Doremus and Daryl Yerdon and Dennis and Thim Doremus; as well as several nieces, nephews. A memorial service for Al will be held on Sunday September 6, 2015, 2 pm at the Ilion Presbyterian Church, Rev. Ruth Kuo will officiate. In lieu of calling hours family and friends are invited to join the gathering at the Ilion Moose Lodge following the service. Friends and family are asked to consider memorial donations to either the American Diabetes Foundation or the American Heart Association.
