A Frank Dolan, 91, passed away on Tuesday, January 31, 2017, at his home with his family by his side. He was born in Herkimer, NY, on October 6, 1925, the son of the late Patrick B. and Anna L Brockway Dolan. He graduated from the Frankfort –Schuyler High School. Frank was a flight engineer on B-32s in the USAAF (1943-1946); upon his return from the service he graduated from Syracuse University in 1951 with a BS in Civil Engineering and was a New York State Licensed Professional Engineer and Land Surveyor. Frank worked for several contractors and consultants prior to being appointed Herkimer County Superintendent/Engineer in 1957 retiring in 1985. Frank was named County Engineer of the Year in 1982, by the National Association of County Engineers. He was active in the NYS County Highway Superintendents Association (President 1972) and the American Road Builders Association. He also served on the Village of Ilion Housing Authority, the Ilion water Board and the Herkimer-Oneida County Solid Waste Authority.
Frank was a member of the Morning Star United Methodist Church, Ilion Community Club, Quiet
Birdmen, Ilion Masonic Lodge and the Ziyara Shrine.
Frank was a lifelong aviation enthusiast both as an aircraft owner and pilot and a model airplane builder and crasher.
He married the former Shirley Windecker in Mohawk, NY, on November 27, 1946. She passed away May 10, 1999. He married Betty Ball Cameron on February 3, 2003.
He is survived by his wife, Betty, his son and daughter-in -law, Dennis and Lori Dolan of Nazareth, PA, his daughter-in-law, Linda Dolan of Wakefield, RI, grandchildren, Alexis, Jennifer, and Joel Dolan and Todd Kirton, great-grandchildren, Jax and Kenzie Dolan , a brother and sister-in-law, Robert Wales and Joletta of Riverside, CA, and sister, Betty Guest Oklahoma City, OK. He is also survived by special friends and neighbors, Lisa and Terry Gollegly. Frank was predeceased also by son Craig, brother, Walter Wales and sisters Beverly Wales and Barbara Mead.
Friends are invited to attend calling hours and funeral service for Frank to be held on Sunday, February 5, 2017, at the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home Inc. 100 Otsego Street, Ilion. Calling hours will be held from 1:00 PM until 4:00PM at the funeral home, with the funeral service to be held at 4:00 PM with Rev. Robert Wollaber officiating; interment will be in the Armory Hill Cemetery in the spring.
In lieu of flowers Frank has asked that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, 100 Lamond Ct., Utica, NY 13502 or Hospice and Palliative Care, 4277 Middle Settlement Rd, New Hartford, NY 13413 in his memory. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

The Whiter Funeral Company was started in 1893 by H.A. Whiter and was originally located in Forestport, NY. Following a fire in Forestport, the family relocated in Ilion, and reopened the funeral home in the early 1900's.
