Ilion
Joan Reed Crookes, 67, passed away Sunday, February 26, 2017, with her loving family by her side. Joan was born in Rome, NY, on June 16 1949, the daughter of the late Glenn and Betty Barber Reed. She attended Holland Patent Schools and was a graduate of Ilion, she also attended U.S.C. On June 22, 1968 she was united in marriage with Albert "Skip" Crookes in Rome, NY.
Joan was employed as a clerk with United Commercial Travelers in Utica prior to her retirement. She was a member of St. Augustine's Church and loved crafts, knitting, macramé, reading, cooking and most of all spending time with her granddaughter.
Joan is survived by her husband Skip, two daughters, Kelley Marie Crookes and Kristin Ann Crookes- Klein both of Ilion, two sisters and a brother in law, Deborah Reed Donahue and Pricilla and James Wildey all of Ilion, her granddaughter Olivia Blanche Klein, Ilion She is also survived by her brother in law , Richard Ritton, Ilion, special friend and sister in law Diane Reed, Ilion, brother in laws and sister in laws, Donald and Donna Reed of Attleboro, MA., David Crookes and Maureen O'Conner, Mashpee, MA, her aunt Pearl Zagurski of Boonville, her special canine companion Layla, thirteen nieces and nephews, several great nieces, a great great niece and several special cousins. Joan was predeceased by her brother Ronald Reed her sister Dale Ritton and brother in law and special friend Pat Donahue.
In keeping with Joan's wishes there will be no public calling hours or funeral service, arrangements are with the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, Inc., 100 Otsego St., Ilion.

The Whiter Funeral Company was started in 1893 by H.A. Whiter and was originally located in Forestport, NY. Following a fire in Forestport, the family relocated in Ilion, and reopened the funeral home in the early 1900's.
