I knew Jim for the last few years; until 2011 when I retired from teaching, I would see him and Phyllis occasionally at the Canal Side when he would shake my hand, “Hello Professor, how are you?” A friendship started when, in 2012, talking to him on the phone while in Yachats, Oregon, he asked me if I would be interested in joining a men’s group. I believe, in his 90s, he saw me, “only” in my 70s as someone to befriend in the club. Before meetings, he always searched me out to chat, making me feel like a brother in spirit. At one point, in fact, after a discussion during which his opinion and mine were in a small minority, he said, “They need us.” His influence extended from introducing me to Al Jazeera TV, to my, as a result of his example, moderating my usual confrontational style with those with whom I disagree. He disagreed with some folks, but always politely and humbly. He was truly a gentle man.

We have wonderful memories of Dr. Anderson and his wife Phyllis. He always insisted that we call him "Jim". The last time we saw Dr. Anderson and his wife we had lunch together in Maine, where they usually summered in Kennebunkport.
HIs attendance at daily Mass inspired me to do the same. One morning while we were leaving Annunciation Church in Ilion we chatted a bit and I asked him why he attended every day and his answer, which I'll never forget was "because I'm invited"! Now he's been invited to the heavenly banquet. God Bless and be with you "Jim" and your family. Guy and Sharon Corriero

I was so sorry to hear that Dr. Anderson passed away. I think he was in our family's life for almost 50 years. In the early days, he was a great supporter for HCCC and a wonderful thought partner for my father. My dad often remarked that Dr. Anderson was one of the smartest men he ever met. In retirement, he became one of my father's most treasured friends. I'm told that as a very young girl, while my parents were hosting a dinner party, I crawled under the table and fell asleep on his feet. In my defense, I was only about three years old. :-)
Dr. Anderson was also my childhood dentist. It seemed he excelled in dentistry, too. I moved away from the Mohawk Valley, and I've had several subsequent dentists compliment his work. And somehow, he made it painless. To this day, I've never had another dentist replicate that!
Dr. Anderson loved good conversation and his range of topics seemed limitless.
My condolences to the Anderson family - he was a great man.

Mywife Linda and I had moved into the former home of Dr .Anderson's friend Dr.Roger Weedon only a day or two before a remarkably spry, extroverted, and exuberantly polite, gentleman who preferred to be called only "Jim" bounded up the stairs from our back door to introduce himself and ask us whether his wife and he could be any assistance in our move..A 26-year military veteran myself, I felt like I had the moving thing down pat, ,but my wife soon had Phyllis helping with redecorating while I received advice on managing the garden out back. I dad never met a more knowledgeable, gracious, and talented gentleman. I soon realized that I had stumbled upon the privilege of moving in beside a true modern-day Renaissance man. The community air-pump (which ,if I remember correctly, Phyllis' brother had constructed out of some spare parts from Remington Arms), his modest but obvious pride in his golf swing, his knowledge of and personal concern for seemingly every one in our new community, his love of ferrying his grand kids around his back yard on his old ub Cadet mower and a personal library of unusual depth: these were just of a few of the possessions which both surrounded and defined him as a man .I relished his WWII stories (my dad was also a WWII vet), but I never succeeded in convincing him to accept the U.S. POW Medal when it came out, or to apply for one of the various NY State military honors, which he had so obviously earned. We spent many long hours discussing, politics, religion, and the state of the world, but seldom came up with any real solutions to anything beyond faith in Christ.. and he and Phyllis entrusted with us the care of their indoor plants and outdoor garden when they went away in their Honda to visit their extended family or their beloved Goose Rocks, Maine. As the years went by, he occasionally would reluctantly suffer Linda and me to use our snow blower on a particularly deep snow in his driveway, but always insisted on inviting us in afterward for hot cocoa. A truly sad day came when he and Phyllis came over to tell us they were moving, if only a matter of a few blocks away to an apartment (" easier to keep up, you see") It felt a little like having my own parents move away .Dr. Jim Anderson, I will miss you dearly, as will so many others. We have lost from this world a truly remarkable man. God bless you, sir for being our friend and neighbor during those years!
