Mohawk

Marilyn J. Smith, 79, of 261 Ward Rd, Mohawk, NY passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 24, 2017 after a long battle with cancer.

She was born on June 6th, 1938 at Ilion Hospital to Frances (Paddock) and Ernest Sitts, and lived in Mohawk, NY all her life. She graduated from Mohawk High School in the class of 1956. She then graduated from the MVCC School of Nursing with an associates degree, and then on to SUNY Utica School of Nursing, earning her bachelor’s degree.

Marilyn worked as a staff nurse at Little Falls Hospital for many years, and then as a Community Health Nurse at Herkimer County. Marilyn loved her nursing career, serving those people she loved. Once married to the late Donald C. Smith, of Mohawk, NY, she leaves one son, Justin A. Smith and his wife Stacy Smith, their two children, Maegan Eileen, and Connor Donal all of Raleigh, NC.

Marilyn also leaves behind her good friend and traveling companion, Anne Blasting of Herkimer, NY. During their retirement years together, they greatly enjoyed traveling all 50 States of the Union, Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico, and the continent of Europe. Marilyn’s favorite trip was their yearly trip to Maine where she and Anne would meet up with old friends. Marilyn’s friends were an important and great part of her everyday life. She gained much strength from the love and kindness of her friends. We would especially mention a good friend, and neighbor, Andrea Williams. Andrea, and her family held a special place in Marilyn’s heart.

Marilyn was a life-long member of the Mohawk Reformed Church. She was an active committee chairperson with the Boy Scouts of America Troop 125, sponsored by the Mohawk VFW, for many years. She was a member of the Herkimer County Red Hat Society and enjoyed their monthly dinners. She also enjoyed the companionship of her high school classmates when they met for their monthly lunches.

The family would like to thank Dr. Samir DeSai, along with Windy Mitchell, P.A. and a special thank you to the Herkimer Infusion Nurses, Diana, and Nancy who treated Marilyn with compassion and care.
