Mohawk Betty L. Couchman, 87, passed away peacefully Friday, February 9, 2018 with her loving family by her side. She was born April 15, 1930 in Utica the daughter of the late Arthur and Myrtle Woffin Crist. She attended Richfield Springs Schools and on June 28, 1947 she was united in marriage with Carl Couchman in Richfield Spring, Carl passed away February 28, 2016. Betty taught fitness and swimming for the Little Falls and Mohawk YMCA and coached track, volleyball and field hockey at Mohawk Central School for many years and also operated, with her sister Shirley, the Shir-Bett Fitness Shop in Richfield. Her warm caring personality was an inspiration to her family, her athletes and all who knew her. Her greatest love was her family. She also loved camping, traveling, cooking as well as attending sporting events. In her younger days she was a winning stock car driver. She was previously recognized by the N.Y.S. Coaches Assoc. for wins totaling over 300 and just recently was the first women elected to the CVA Hall of Fame. Betty is survived by five sons and daughters in law. Mark and Sarah of Binghamton, Dean and Karen of Middleville, Tedd and Cindy of Baldwinsville, Brett and Melody of Herkimer, Joel and Mary of Mohawk, her daughter Dawn O'Day of Canastota, daughter in-law Debbie and husband Dave Bartlett of Mohawk, her brother Frances Crist as well as 19 grandchildren, 22 greatgrandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind the YMCA exercise coffee group who she loved dearly as well as her special neighbors the Hendricks family and many friends. She was predeceased by her son Scott, her sister Shirley Seaman and son in-law Thomas O'Day. Calling hours will be from 12-4pm Saturday, February 17, 2018 with a funeral service to follow at 4:00PM at the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, Inc. 100 Otsego St. Ilion with Pastor Harry Reed officiating. Interment will be in Dennison Corners Cemetery in the spring. Friends are asked to consider memorials to Hospice and Palliative Care, 4277 Middle Settlement Rd. New Hartford, NY 13413 or the Abraham House, 1203 Kemble St., Utica, NY 13501envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
