Remsen-Ilion George W. Smith, 84 of Ilion, N.Y., passed away peacefully on Monday, January 14, 2019 at The Grand Healthcare Center in Ilion. George was born on March 22, 1934 in Watertown, N.Y. He was the son of the late Michael and Irene (Kraft) Smith. He was a graduate of Watertown Schools and served in Germany with the United States Army. George worked as a supervisor at Bendix/Lucas, in Utica, N.Y. Upon retiring George lived in Remsen, N.Y. for 31 years where he enjoyed living in the country until returning to Ilion where he spent the last several years of his life near his beloved daughters and grandchildren. He enjoyed many visits with his great-grandchildren that brought so much joy to his life and put a smile on his face. He was of the Catholic faith. George is survived by his two devoted daughters; Michele Smith of Yorkville, N.Y. and Cherri Hyer of Ilion; two brothers, Michael Smith of Syracuse and Robert Smith and wife Joan of Enfield, C.T.; two sisters, Irene Nosco and Helen Walsh; three granddaughters: Leigh Parks-Brewer and husband John Brewer of Ilion, Brooke Palumbo and her husband Matthew Palumbo of Frankfort, N.Y. and Nicole Bennett of Frankfort; three special great-grandchildren: Ryan Parks, Blake Palumbo and Levi Palumbo; the Abbott Family of Johnstown, N.Y. He also leaves several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, his brother Edward Smith and three sisters: Elizabeth Horning and Veronica Blizzard and Olga Haan. In keeping with George's wishes there are no public calling hours or services at this time. A memorial service will be held for the family and close friends in the Spring at the Armory Hill Cemetery in Ilion. Those wishing to remember George in a special way, may consider making a memorial donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in his honor. This was a charity he was very passionate about and to which he made many generous contributions. George’s family would like to extend a sincere thank you to all the staff at The Grand Healthcare Center for their compassionate care while he was a resident there.
