Ilion

Gary Thomas Sickler, 67, passed away peacefully at home May 3, 2019 after a brief illness. Gary was born October 23, 1951 to the late Mr. & Mrs. George (Mary Martin) Sickler.

He was a 1971 graduate of New Hartford Central High School and attended MVCC for Criminal Justice. He served as a police officer for several local districts and retired from NYS DMV.

Over the course of his life, Gary loved spending time at the family’s camp in Sylvan Beach, scuba diving, and volunteering for numerous events throughout the Mohawk Valley. He thoroughly enjoyed time spent with the Retired Cop Coffee Club and PBA, as well as RVing with family and friends, and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and concerts. Antiquing and stumbling across a rare find were also lifelong interests of his.

Gary is survived by his daughter Jessica Sickler (Bill Wengert) and their children Averie, Leo and Brodie of Whitesboro, daughter Katy Sweeney (Tony Query) of Spencer, NC, partner Kim Burns of Ilion, and many lifelong and close friends.

A celebration of Gary's life will be held on Monday, May 13th from 4-6 pm at the Ilion Marina pavilion. In lieu of bouquets and wreaths, please consider plantable bulbs for a memorial garden. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery in Whitesboro.
