Richfield Springs - Mr. William D. Slaughter, 82, of Richfield Springs, formerly of Ilion, passed away Tuesday, September 19, 2023 in the Chestnut Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Oneonta. Bill was born in Utica on October 11, 1940, the son of the late Kenneth and Nellie Wainman Slaughter. He attended Richfield Springs and Ilion Schools and graduated from Ilion High School. He was married to Marilyn Shaw in Ilion on May 27, 1961. The two were married for 60 years prior to Marilyn's passing on September 26, 2021. Bill served in the US Air Force, stationed in Germany from 1960 until his Honorable Discharge in 1963. Bill was at one time employed with the Remington Arms Co. in Ilion. He also attended the NYS Police Academy in Albany which led to his career as a Trooper and Investigator with the New York State Police based in Herkimer until his retirement in 1994. He then spent a few years working for the Herkimer County Sheriff's Department. Once fully retired, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends at Canadarago Lake and in Ormond Beach, Florida. He is survived by his sons, Scott (Jim Batchelder) of Cape Cod, MA, Robert (Lori) of Ilion and Richard of Ilion; grandchildren, Michael, Jacob and Emily Slaughter and Steven (Rachael) Shepardson; two brothers in law, Kenneth (Gloria) Shaw and William Shaw; one sister in law, Sandra (Ray) Bennett and many nieces, nephews and cousins. A graveside service will take place on Tuesday, October 10, 2023 at 2:00 PM in Cedarville Cemetery with Military Honors.
